Wasabi Storage BuilderŪ64 for NAS Features iSCSI Initiator

Wasabi Systems’ high-performance NAS product offers additional flexibility for the SMB market.

NORFOLK, VIRGINIA – May 11, 2006 - Wasabi Systems today announced the latest addition to Wasabi Storage Builder®64 for NAS: an integrated iSCSI initiator developed by Wasabi to enable the use of iSCSI targets to supplement or replace locally attached disks or RAID arrays. With the additional configuration flexibility using iSCSI targets, system builders can now partition NAS server and RAID array functions to better meet costumer needs and specifications. The Wasabi iSCSI Software Initiator supports ERL 0, 1 & 2.

Wasabi Storage Builder for NAS offers advanced snapshot capability that integrates with Windows Volume Shadow Copy Services (VSS), flexible backup tools for tape and disk, complete IPv6 support, email event notification and fully integrated Active Directory Services support. Wasabi Storage Builder for NAS offers the most value of any solution on the market. Although designed to feature the cost effective Serial ATA standard the product also supports SCSI and Fibre Channel drives for high performance applications.

The advanced functionality of Wasabi’s new NAS offering makes it possible for a single company to supply both NAS and IP-SAN storage building blocks. System builders now have the capability to create a simple-to-use but highly powerful NAS head using iSCSI storage on the back-end.

“We’re very excited about this new release because for the first time Wasabi Storage Builder for NAS can leverage our iSCSI technology,” said Jim Schrand, Wasabi’s vice president of marketing. “The advanced error recovery levels of the Wasabi iSCSI Software Initiator and the enterprise features of our NAS solution greatly expand the potential market our OEMs, VARs and Sis can reach.”

Incorporating Wasabi’s innovative Flashware® technology, Wasabi Storage Builder for NAS delivers a robust file-based network storage capability that transforms commodity PC server components into cost-effective NAS appliances and NAS heads that scale from small and medium business (SMB) market applications up to enterprise environments at previously unattainable price-points.

Wasabi Storage Builder for NAS provides support for client workstations running all mainstream desktop and server operating systems including Microsoft® Windows®, Linux, Solaris, HP-UX, Mac OS X, FreeBSD and Wasabi Certified® BSD. Full protocol support for CIFS and NFS are standard.

Other features include:

  • Advanced Journaling File System – for enhanced reliability, an advanced journaling file-system provides added data integrity and supports rapid restart after an unexpected system interruption.
  • Integrated RAID support – Configuration and management is fully integrated into the intuitive Web-based UI.
  • ISCSI Initiator support – allows use of iSCSI target storage for the shared file systems of the NAS server. The selection of iSCSI targets and configuration of authentication information is incorporated into the UI.
  • Wizard based – Basic setup of Storage Builder for NAS can be completed in minutes using the integrated wizards. All primary configuration points are covered in an easy to follow and systematic method.
  • Snapshots – up to 4,000 snapshots are supported with a flexible scheduling capability. This functionality integrates seamlessly with Microsoft Windows Shadow Copies of Shared Folders so that Windows users can directly access snapshot copies without assistance from a system administrator.
  • Active Directory support – for departmental applications, Storage Builder for NAS cleanly integrates with Active Directory based networks.
  • GUI localization - providing support for major European and Asian languages.
