Wasabi Adds 10Gb Ethernet Support to iSCSI SANs |
High Performance Addition Speeds Past Fibre Channel
Storage Networking World, Orlando, Florida - 7 April 2008 -- Wasabi Systems today announced its upcoming support for 10Gb Ethernet in its high-performance Storage Builder network storage operating system. This powerful new capability, which will be available next month, delivers a significant performance boost to iSCSI solutions. Using a switch that has 1Gb and 10Gb ports, the 10Gb Ethernet allows users to aggregate storage traffic from multiple servers on a 1Gb network into the 10Gb capable VMX 2000sx Series iSCSI SAN appliance.
“Although already less expensive than Fibre Channel, we expect that the cost of 10Gb Ethernet will decrease substantially during 2008, leading to widespread adoption in storage and other applications that can benefit from a fat pipe,” said Kirk Roller, Wasabi’s Senior Vice President, Worldwide Sales and Marketing. “This addition bumps our iSCSI solutions into the performance realm that previously required Fibre Channel fabrics. As 10Gb Ethernet continues to decline in price per port, we expect the mix to move very quickly from 1Gb to 10Gb.”
Support for 10Gb Ethernet delivers extremely high storage performance at an exceptional value. The cost of our 10Gb Ethernet is dramatically lower than Fibre Channel solutions that typically require an optical interface; the maximum throughput of a Fibre Channel solution with a copper interface is 2Gbps. In comparison, iSCSI using non-optical interface has already been measured at 4 to 5 times that throughput.
“We worked closely with Wasabi to optimize the performance of our Myri-10G network-interface cards in the Wasabi VMX series iSCSI appliances ,” said Dr. Chuck Seitz, CEO of Myricom. “Our company is focused on delivering high-performance networking solutions, and we are pleased to partner with Wasabi to deliver 10Gb Ethernet capability to the storage market.”
Wasabi’s Storage Builder OS platform has been benchmarked at near line speed on the dual-core Intel Xeon CPUs used in the VMX 2000sx series using the Myri-10G card.
